South Africa has two different school calendars systems. The School Calendar for the Government or Public schools breaks the year into four terms, and that for the Private schools breaks the year into three or four terms. Most students attend government schools in South Africa, so traffic at holiday destinations is busiest when they are on school holidays. All schools are on holidays during Christmas and New Year which is the longest holiday break for students(5-6 weeks vacation), being summer.

Note: Teachers re-open 2 days earlier (than the learners) on January 7, 2019. They also vacate 2 days late during the Christmas holidays on Dec 6, 2019. This means that Teachers spend a total of 4 extra days; 2 days during the 1st School Term and the remaining 2 days on the 4th Term.
Note2: This School Calendar applies to Goverment schools (both primary and secondary) in Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape and Western Cape. All the nine provinces have the same school calendar for 2019.
