The National Research Foundation (NRF) offers bursaries to support and promote research and human capital development.These bursaries are released as Block Grants to South African public universities.

The Masters and Doctoral scholarships are open to South African citizens and permanent residents as well as a limited percentage of foreign nationals who will register at South African public universities in 2020 on a full-time basis only. The Honours/BTech Scholarships are open only to South African citizens or permanent residents.

Scholarships are intended to support Honours/BTech, Masters and Doctoral candidates to pursue studies in all areas of Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Humanities, including Priority Research Areas.

 

THE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants Must satisfy the following entry criteria before applying:

  • Full time students at a South African public University
  • Students in all areas of Science, Engineering/Technology and Social Sciences/Humanities
  • Students that obtained an average mark of 65% and above in their previous degree;
  • Students that have received NRF funding for postgraduate studies, NSFAS and/or University Financial Aid for honours or masters studies, and/or who are currently funded for postgraduate studies by the NRF; NSFAS and/or University Financial Aid;
  • Students that have completed their undergraduate and/or honours degree within the minimum prescribed period; and
  • Students that have completed their masters degree within two-years.

 

The following are NOT eligible for the bursary:

  • Applicants that already hold an Honours’ or Final year B Tech degree
  • Applicants pursuing an undergraduate degree irrespective of the degree that they are enrolled for
  • Applicants’ intending to pursue Postgraduate diploma qualification

Bursary grants are based on academic merit but priority will be given to financially needy applicants.
 
 

HOW TO APPLY FOR NRF BURSARY 2020

Honours

Applications should be completed and submitted to the university financial aid/bursary/postgraduate funding office. Any enquiries about the application process should be directed to the university office.

Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral

The processing of applications takes approximately five months from the closing date of the application until the decisions are made.

Only completed online applications will be considered. Once applications are validated by the institution, it will display an application status “Submitted to NRF for Review”. These are the only applications that will be considered and assess by the NRF. The status will not change on the system or display of the funding programme.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Submit certified copies of the following documents:

  • South African ID document / Passport if non-South African.
  • Full academic record
  • Official Proof of NSFAS or University Financial Aid funding (for applicants that were previously funded by NSFAS or University Financial Aid)

 

THE CLOSING DATE

December 31, 2019

This is the Official Closing Date for 2020 applications. It opened on April 5, 2019. So hurry and apply Today but call the numbers listed below to verify your eligibility.
